People tend to throw around words like healthy eating or clean eating so casually that it gives me the collywobbles. I ask them… Wait! Do You Even Know the meaning of ‘Healthy Eating?’
And they be like – Yeah! It’s where you eat healthy. Duh! Sometimes hey give me the most contemptuous look and walk away in to their world of mediocre health knowledge.
And sometimes I’d say – Thank You, Captain Obvious! And start debating with them to understand their eating habits and realize how dumb they are in matters of food and ‘healthy eating.’
Healthy Eating is not going on a strict diet and ogling at you favourite burger from a distance while you eat an insipid salad. NO!
That is diet! And most people I have seen cannot maintain diets for more than 2 weeks straight. It is more difficult to continue a diet than it is to get an A+ from the most hostile professor.
The point being.. healthy eating is not killing your dream foods. Dream foods are invariably foods with too many carbs and fats and stuff that your body might puff up if had too much of.
Get the idea out of your head that dieting is must for the right weight and the perfect body shape. You are a normal individual not Dwayne Johnson!
So what you need is not dieting! It’s Healthy Eating!
Healthy Eating is..
Yes! You heard me right! Healthy Eating doesn’t mean eating lettuce and cucumbers and tomatoes. It is also eating cheesy burgers, spicy fries and fried chicken!
Okay before you call Domino’s, let me make things a bit clearer to you!
Like I mentioned, people go dieting and cannot hang on for more than 2 weeks. You know what happens after those two weeks?
Those 2 weeks might have made you half a pound to 2 pounds lighter, depending on what sort of a diet was being followed but the next 2 days – the days of your diet celebration are going to not only wipe out the entire effect of your diet but will require you to diet for at least 2 months because you are, for sure, about to ride on the binge coaster.
Think of your gastronomic dreams as birds and your diet as the cage of the bird. What happens when you cage a bird? It craves freedom. What happens when you free a caged bird? It might land on a different continent before it knows.
Exactly what happens with a dieter. The binging spree post a diet is so ridiculous that you are gonna be fatter than before.
And this is not your fault. It’s a natural thing. When you go on a diet, you generally omit carbs and fats from your foods. Carbs are naturally carved for by your body on a daily basis. But unused carbs also become fats. Nonetheless, your body craves carbs even without you realizing it!
So when you have been away from carbs for so long, you try to make up for the carbs you couldn’t eat all this time and binge away on foods that you should eat in moderation at best.
Also, you binge on fats! Mostly bad fats! Game Over!
So the marginal success of your diet falls flat on its face and become a complete failure!
This invariably happens!
This is the reason I am against diets! They carry false promises and are truly difficult to follow.
So I tell people – Healthy Eating is better than Dieting!
In healthy eating, you have to make only slight changes to your diets. Say if you eat pizza twice a week, start eating it only once in 2 weeks.
If you aren’t eating enough protein, start eating protein. If you are a vegan, I’d recommend whey protein. But I wouldn’t recommend a vegan diet in any case.
A vegan diet lacks in several nutritional departments and might make you slim and lean but not fit and healthy. A skinny person in not necessarily a healthy person.
So Healthy Eating is what I recommend to everyone I know, apart from practicing it myself.
I believe that if oily food and chips, burgers, pizzas, cola drinks, chocolates are available in this world, it is meant to be eaten and savoured.
Eating healthy means not eating any particular food in excess. That means that you should not have too many potato chips just because they are your favorite and have an over dose of carbohydrates.
However some people do follow strict diet patterns like a ‘high protein diet’. But as a normal person, without any compulsions, you should have try everything including fruits and vegetables and do regular exercise.
Also, by trying everything I also mean having chips, burgers and pizzas once in a while and not on everyday basis.
Once you incorporate everything in your diet i.e. regular pulses, fruits, vegetables, fats etc. You will feel healthy. Also, by trying everything, one gets to know what his body requires and how it reacts to various elements.
This should be followed by exercise. I have repeated this again because I know that diet alone cannot do much. Around 30 minutes of exercise which includes short runs along with a few stretch exercises can do wonders to your physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Also keep yourself hydrated and have water at regular intervals to keep yourself fresh. A person, by themselves, can set their own diet patterns once they know how their body remains fit, which does not mean that you become super skinny, but you feel less lazy and more energetic. (Even a fat person can be healthy since body patterns differ.)
Cooking at home is a great advantage as it allows you to control what you eat, so your unhealthy can also become healthy at home since you control it.
So, eat healthy, exercise regularly, stay hydrated and stay fit.
